After everything is done, a calm state has come.
KYU TAE, KIM Works Exhibition
KYU TAE, KIM was a Korean-Brazilian painter who was born in South Korea and immigrated to Brazil. This solo exhibition is being held in Japan for the first time since last year. The theme is, After everything is done, a calm state has come. The fundamentals of the works lie in ideal and peace.
KIM was an Oriental painter who studied under OK JIN, KIM, the master of Korean painting, and you can see some classic titles such as After everything is done, happiness has come, Everything goes smoothly and After everything is done, success has come. However, his style of painting changed dramatically ten years after he immigrated to Brazil. KIM, who was searching the spiritualism of Oriental painting as a professor of ITU University, suddenly heard the voice of the universe one day. He realized the hymn of life in the land of South America had exactly the same idea as the Yin-Yang Five Elements from Oriental philosophy, Since then, his works have become completely novel and unique. Colors which make great contrast, such as green and blue to red, are widely spread on canvas, and the energy which spouts from the vivid colors runs about the canvas in all directions. Funny owls and phoenix fly about with joy, and all the creatures glorify their lives proudly. KIM frequently uses words from the Parajna-Paramita sutra, All is vanity and All is relative when expressing his works. Every existence (color) of this world exists with Cause and Result, and does not have peculiar essence (vanity). However, it is not nihilism. Vanity is the phenomenon that is perceived by someone. Vanity is truth and is space, and color is time. Since color means environment, the kind of color which is chosen determines the environment and the environment rules people. KIM continues, If you want to see a color, you have to keep your mind pure. Unifying mind and body is required, not just imitating other things. That is what he was enlightened about through his dialog with the land of South America and sublimated to his works as his inner voice. He is often called a modern popular painter because of his innocent works. Otsue caricature is one of the typical popular paintings of Japan. ICCHO HANABUSA who is famous for his elegant painting style said, Otsue has no equal, and a master of painting TESSAI TOMIOKA said, Otsue is my master, pursuing it his whole life. What is the secret of Otsue caricature It could be its pure spiritualism. Just like Basho wrote in his haiku poetry Buddha is the start of the brush of an Otsue caricature, it used to be a simple prayer of common people which originated from Buddhist painting. Popular painting naturally became a form of pursuing happiness. Works that are drawn innocently by obscure painters appeal to our feelings with their free lines and vivid five colors that overwhelm. There we can find the unified mind-and-body spirit that KIM mentioned. Yet, the moment a painter fabricates his work for his reputation, the work becomes disagreeable. Honor comes to appear through his works, and gradually it strays from the original pursuit for happiness. MUNEYOSHI YANAGI who named the painting style popular painting had realized that. It was Korean popular paintings that fascinated him with the beauty of popular art. For contemporary painters who are required to be unique, it must be an extremely difficult task to have this spirit. As for KIM, he finally overcame the conflict. After everything is done, a calm state has come. How many contemporary painters can use these words naturally This exceptional type of painter, who hears the voice of the universe, and tries to draw his works for others, makes us contemplate what the ideal art is.
